DESCRIPTION:For this year's C sar Chav z intercultural lecture at Elmhurst College\, a sociologist from Texas A&M University will offer a different perspective on the topic of immigration\, looking at it through the lens of education. On Wednesday\, September 20\, Pat Rubio Goldsmith will present Structural Violence\, which examines how the immigration status of Mexican parents affects the long-term education of their children. Goldsmith is an associate professor of sociology at Texas A&M University\, and the founding director of the Latino/a and Mexican American Studies Program. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1999. His research examines issues related to Mexican migration and immigration status\, and to racial and ethnic inequality in educational outcomes. His work has appeared in scholarly journals such as the Sociology of Education\, American Educational Research Journal\, Urban Studies\, and Aztlan: A Journal of Chicano Studies.
