3rd Annual Strides Against MG Walk
Walk for Myasthenia Gravis
Empire’s Lucious Lyon is not the only one with Myasthenia Gravis; real people have it, too. The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Illinois will hold its third annual Strides Against MG Walk at 8:30a.m. on June 7 at Berens Park, 493 Oaklawn Avenue, Elmhurst, IL. Registration starts at 8:00a.m.Donate or register for the benefit walk and kids’ dash at www.firstgiving.com/mgfillinois/2015. Participant cost is $30 per walker ($35 day of the walk), $10 per child under age 12. There will be family-fun activities, music, refreshments and raffle prizes. Proceeds will go toward research and programs of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Illinois.
MG affects approximately 20 per 100,000 people of any age, race, or gender. It is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups. It can affect muscles that control eye movements, eyelids, chewing, swallowing, breathing, coughing and facial expression, as well as the arms and legs.
Since its inception, the walk has raised $20,000. Last year, 13 Chicago- and Elmhurst-area businesses served as corporate sponsors for the event.
Elmhurst resident Joan Wincentsen, executive director of MGF of Illinois, was diagnosed with MG in 1998. “This walk helps us raise awareness of the disease. Medical research has made wonderful strides, and one day we’ll find a cure,” Wincentsen said.
