The Forgotten Civil Rights Movement of the 1930s-1940s
Erik Gellman, author and Roosevelt University history professor, explores the interracial movement in the 1930s to beat back fascism, both at home and abroad, to preserve and expand America's democracy. Gellman will discuss the Chicago context of the struggle, including the 1936 formation of the National Negro Congress, the organizing of steel mill and packinghouse workers, and the artistic Renaissance that took place in the "City of Big Shoulders," and the important legacy left in its wake. Part of the "It's History" series of programs for adults. Note: The museum will be open from 5 until 7 p.m. to view the related exhibit, Our Lives, Our Stories: America's Greatest Generation.
