Students and faculty will present readings, translations from several languages, biographical and other reflections, and videos in recognition of Morrison’s groundbreaking impacts on American literature and the legacy of racism in U.S. literature, history and culture. By making race an integral part of all of her writing, Morrison was instrumental in questioning and challenging traditional portrayals of African American characters, subsequently changing the ways we understand American literature and history. Her contributions to democracy and her global reach were further recognized in 2012, when she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
