World Music Series to Celebrate Indian Vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi
In December, the Elmhurst College World Music Series travels to India to celebrate the music of renowned vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi. The M.S. Subbulakshmi Commemoration Concert, presented by Elmhurst College and the Chicago Kalapriya Foundation, celebrates Subbulakshmi's 100th birthday anniversary with a concert of some her greatest songs. Revered as the “Nightingale of India,” M.S. Subbulakshmi is known as the leading exponent of classical and semi-classical songs in the Carnatic tradition of South India.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, said this about Subbulakshmi: “Who am I, a mere prime minister before a queen, a Queen of Music.”
The M.S. Subbulakshmi Commemoration Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel (190 Prospect Ave., Elmhurst, www.elmhurst.edu/campusmap). Tickets are $5 and $10 and are available at www.elmhurst.edu/music/worldmusicfestival. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.
